Lavora nel campo del magnetismo sia di materiali classici ma preparati in dimensioni nanometriche, sia di materiali di origine molecolare, detti Magneti a singola molecola. Nel primo settore cerca di finalizzare le proprie ricerche ad applicazioni nel campo biomedico per la cura di tumori mediante drug-delivery guidata magneticamente e mediante lo sfruttamento dell’effetto ipertermico delle nanoparticelle magnetiche. Nel secondo caso le applicazioni dei magneti a singola molecola sono ancora allo stadio di ricerca pure e prevedono l’uso dei sistemi studiati per applicazioni nella nanoelettronica (spintronica) e nella quantum-computation.

E' stato responsabile nazionale di progetti della Fondazione Telethon per uno studio integrato dell'accoppiamento eccitazione contrazione (EC) e lo sviluppo di forza in fibre di muscolo scheletrico di anfibio e di mammifero normale e distrofico: grant n° 239 (1992-93); n° 625 (1995-96) ed n° 945 (1997-00), e di progetti MIUR, Cofin 99 e 2003, per uno studio integrato dell'azione dei lipidi bioattivi nelle cellule muscolari scheletriche e cardiache. Nel 2005 è coinvolto in un progetto sull’atrofia del muscolo sheletrico indotta da immobilizzazione e denervazione: RISE project, Medical University of Vienna.

Principali linee di ricerca: Il suo campo di ricerca è lo studio del processo dell'accoppiamento eccitazione-contrazione, EC, in singole fibre muscolari scheletriche di rana e di mammifero. La tecnica usata per registrare gli eventi elettrici è una versione originale del doppio gap di Vaselina (Francini & Stefani, 1989). I risultati ottenuti con questa tecnica hanno permesso di descrivere modelli originali della cinetica di attivazione e di inattivazione della corrente del Ca2+ di tipo L (Francini et al, 1992; Francini et al, 1996) e delle complesse cinetiche del movimento di carica intramembranario (ICM) nelle fibre muscolari di mammifero (Francini et al, 2001; Bencini et al., 2003; Squecco et al, 2004a,b). Dal 1996 studia gli effetti della sfingosina 1-fosfato, S1P, nelle cellule muscolari. La S1P ha importanti azioni sull’omeostasi del Ca2+: a) nei mioblasti induce transienti del Ca2+, motilità del citoscheletro, attiva canali ionici meccanosensibili e la comunicazione intercellulare tramite gap junctions tra mioblasti (Meacci et al., 2002; Formigli et al., 2002, 2004, 2005a, b) nelle fibre muscolari di mammiferi adulti facilita il processo di accoppiamento EC (Bencini et al, 2003). Attualmente studia i meccanismi del differenziamento di cellule mesenchimali sia in cellule omologhe che di fenotipo diverso ad esempio mioblasti in cardiomiociti e cellule mesenchimali del midollo osseo in neuroni.
