Description of the Program

It is well recognized that globalization of the world economy in the early 21st century is leading to the vanishing of national boundaries in terms of multi-national corporations and workforce.  Future scientists and engineers must be prepared for careers that span not only several different fields, but several different countries as well.  Graduates that are well prepared in global awareness through international experience provided during their advanced studies will hold a competitive advantage in the future science and engineering job market.

The Joint International Ph.D. program endeavors to establish an international collaboration of education and research between the Università degli studi di Firenze (UNIFI) and Arizona State University (ASU), for the purpose of providing international educational and research experience for Doctoral students at both partner institutions.  Students matriculating through this program will simultaneously satisfy the degree requirements of both Universities, as well as fulfilling residency requirements in both universities as detailed under the Program Specification of Section II.  Arizona State University and the Universita degli Studi di Firenze, will confer the title of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from ASU and Dottore di Ricerca from UNIFI.  This degree is not considered as two separate degrees falling under the requirements of two concurrent degrees, rather one degree granted through a partnership of two universities.
