Parkinson's, new research on the molecular mechanism of the disease

Carried out with the contribution of a Florentine team and published by Science

The sabotage action performed by small protein aggregates at the expense of nerve cells is at the core of a research carried out with the contribution of a Florentine team and published by Science.

The mechanism by which some small protein aggregates attack nerve cells in Parkinson's disease has been described. The structural analysis of these molecules (alpha-synuclein oligomers) and their sabotage action to the detriment of the nervous system has been unveiled by an international research team which includes the University of Florence group of Fabrizio Chiti, professor of Biochemistry, in a journal article appeared in Science, entitled "Structural basis of membrane disruption and cellular toxicity by alpha-synuclein oligomers" (DOI: 10.1126 / science.aan6160).
