The association between celiac disease and epilepsy, although infrequent, is known at clinical level. An interdisciplinary research carried out by the University appearing in “Scientific Reports”, studied the molecular mechanisms underlying the association between celiac disease and epilepsy.
The study demonstrates for the first time the relationship between the toxic effects of gluten and epilepsy ( “The gliadin peptide 31–43 exacerbates kainate neurotoxicity in epilepsy models” doi: 10.1038 / s41598–017–14845–4).
