A gel to restore works of art

Published in the scientific journal PNAS a research by the department of Chemistry and CSGI

A product that promises to revolutionize the work of restoration of artistic heritage. It is a gel that efficiently and completely eliminates the traces of adhesive tapes used for the conservation of works of art. It was conceived by the team of researchers of the Department of Chemistry coordinated by Piero Baglioni, as documented by the article published in the scientific journal PNAS ("Restoration of paper artworks with microemulsions confined in hidtrogels for safe and efficient removal of adhesive tapes").

"From the Dead Sea Scrolls to Fontana's canvases - says Baglioni - adhesive tapes are used for temporary conservation interventions that often become permanent, also because their removal risks damaging the work of art. A great challenge for those involved in conservation and restoration."
