Sustainability, Unifi for FestiWell

The programme of the event organized by EUniWell

Sustainable environmental design and planning, energy dependence and the European Green Pact, food and the health of the planet are the topics that will be addressed on Wednesday, May 11 during the one-day happening organized by the University of Florence within FestiWell, the event organized by the European Alliance EUniWell, now in its second edition, entitled "Towards Global Sustainable Wellbeing" (May 2-13).

The appointments scheduled by the University begin with an in-person workshop at the Santa Teresa campus entitled "System thinking approach for sustainable integrated process design" (via della Mattonaia, 8 - 9.30 a.m.) organized by the Interuniversity Center for Bioecological and Technological Innovation for the Environment (ABITA), in collaboration with Paola Gallo and Alessandra Donato. The workshop addresses the issue of what the University will look like in twenty years, to raise awareness of the design of the future and in particular taking into account the aspects of energy and materials and everything that affects people's health.

At 10.30 am, in an online meeting on Zoom, Giovanna Potestà, Caterina Ferraro, Francesco La Fata and Antonella Gori, all young researchers and PhDs, will present works that offer a contribution to the construction of a society oriented towards the improvement of the conditions and quality of life. They will propose solutions for the well-being within historic urban centres, for the reduction of waste through the application of innovative principles in management, for the repopulation of the suburbs thanks to blockchain technologies, as well as show the benefits related to urban forests.

At 11.30 a.m., the Aula Magna will host the debate "Energy dependence, sustainable solutions and the Green Deal. Towards a more sustainable and peaceful future" that can be followed in person and online on www.unifi.it/webtv (11.30 am - Piazza San Marco, 4). The professors of the University of Florence Luciano Bozzo, Rossella Bardazzi and Maria Grazia Pazienza will talk about energy dependence in light of the conflict in Ukraine and will address the issue of how Europe, within this framework, can achieve in time the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.

At 4 p.m., in the Rector's Office, there will be a meeting entitled "Sustainable nutrition for human and planetary health: how the food we eat can be a multi-problem solution" where Valentina Taglietti and Alice Pomiato will offer practical advice for a healthy and environmentally friendly diet, while Luigi Vella, coordinator of the catering service of the Regional Agency for the Right to University Study, will explain how university canteens are changing to ensure a more sustainable diet for students.

At 6.30 p.m., at the Spazio Alfieri cinema, there will be a screening of Soyalism, which tells the story of how the industrial production chain of pork meat is the prerogative of a few companies to the detriment of small producers and how huge intensive livestock farms are undermining the social and environmental balance of the planet.
