Nel 1996 è entrato a far parte del Department of Mechanical Engineering della Kathoelieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgio, all'interno del progetto EU Brite Euram Project VAMP project (Vibro-Acoustic Modelling and Prediction of Transportation Vehicles).
Rientrato a Firenze ha prima ricoperto il ruolo di ricercatore a tempo indeterminato (1998-2002) e poi di professore associato (2002). Dal 2018 è professore ordinario.
Marco Pierini is an Associate Professor at the Dept. of Mechanics and Industrial Technologies, Università degli Studi di Firenze. He is head and co-founder of the Research Centre for Innovation and Safety of Powered Two-Wheelers. He has 20 years of experience in transport research with special focus on road safety, NVH, urban and interurban mobility. During the past 8 years, his research activity was mainly focused on various aspects of road vehicles and mobility. Topics of interest are: passive and active safety, urban mobility, electric vehicles, NVH. All these activities are developed at national and international level within national or EC funded projects as well as in direct cooperation with the industry. He participated to the following projects since the 4th Framework Program: MONICA, HEMBOT, VAMP, SEANET, PSN, APROSYS, APSN, PISA, MYMOSA, SMART RRS, eSUM, MIDMOD, VECOM, 2BESAFE and SAFERIDER. All in all he has been responsible for more than 20 project at EU, National and regional level. He is responsible of the PhD school in Development of Industrial Products and Processes.
Most recent projects focused on:
Development of enhanced braking system and autonomous braking system for motorcycle applications. The work was carried out within the PISA project
Development of a new smart road restraint system able to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused in road traffic accidents by integrating primary and tertiary sensor systems in a new RRS system. The work is carried out within the SMART RRS project
Development of Good Practice Guides for improving safety of Urban Motorcycling, with a special attention to the human behaviour and the training activity. The work was carried out within the eSUM project

Legenda
Marco Pierini graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1991 and obtained the PhD in Machine Design in 1994. In 1994 he was a guest researcher at Brüel Acoustics, Holte, Denmark within the EU Human Capital and Mobility "MONICA" (Methods on noise identification control activities) project.
In 1995 he firstly moved to the Centro Ricerche FIAT (CRF), Turin, Italy, where he was involved in a project on vibro-acustics optimization in the automotive field; then he was a guest researcher at Mechanics and Nuclear Engineering Department of the University of Manchester, U.K. where he continued his activity in the field of NVH within the EU Human Capital and Mobility "MONICA" project.
In 1996 he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Kathoelieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, within the EU Brite Euram Project VAMP project (Vibro-Acoustic Modelling and Prediction of Transportation Vehicles).
He then returned to Florence where he was first appointed as an assistant professor (1998) and then as an associate professor (2002). Since 2018 he is full professor.
Since 2002 while continuing his activity in the field of NVH, he broadened his interests to transport safety, and he was among the promoters and fonders of MOVING (www.moving.unifi.it) that he is currently coordinating.
Since 2007 he is also coordinating the activity of the sustainable mobility team which deals with the different aspects of people and merchandise movement. The focus is mainly on urban mobility and vehicle electrification.
He is currently coordinating several research projects funded by the EC, at national, regional and local level, as well as project founded by the industry.
