L’attività di RICERCA SCIENTIFICA, sviluppata a livello nazionale ed internazionale, si colloca principalmente nel settore dell’idrologia e delle costruzioni idrauliche. La maggior parte delle sue comunicazioni scientifiche, pubblicate su peer reviewed journals o atti di convegni nazionali e internazionali, sono qui di seguito sinteticamente riportate, considerando la maggior parte delle pubblicazioni del periodo recente e poche pubblicazioni selezionate del periodo precedente.
L’attività di ricerca attuale riguarda principalmente il rischio idraulico e il nesso acqua-cibo-energia ed ecosistemi. Nell'ambito dell’analisi del rischio idraulico, l’attività di ricerca riguarda gli interventi di mitigazione, di tipo strutturale (Isola et al, 2020) e non strutturale (Lompi et al. 2022a; Mori et al. 2021; Lompi et al 2021; Pileggi et al 2020), in ambiente urbano (Pacetti et al., 2022; 2020; Ivanov et al. 2021) e con riferimento a variabili idrologiche di progetto (Lompi et al., 2022b; Pampaloni et al., 2021). E’ approfondito lo studio degli impatti del cambiamento climatico sulle componenti del ciclo idrologico (Caporali et al. 2020, Fatichi et al., 2016; 2013, 2012a,b,c; 2011) e l’analisi statistica di variabili idrologiche (Fatichi et al., 2009; Fatichi & Caporali, 2009; 2008). Con specifico riferimento al nesso acqua, energia e cibo, alcune attività hanno riguardato: i) la definizione di metodi per misurare l’insicurezza alimentare per eventi di breve durata come i disastri naturali di tipo idrologico (Pacetti et al., 2017; 2019); ii) il cambiamento di uso del suolo e la gestione dei sedimenti con riferimento agli invasi artificiali e alla gestione della risorsa idrica (Pacetti et al., 2020; Becchi et al., 2009); iii) il monitoraggio di grandezze idrologiche (Morbidelli et al., 2020); iv) i Servizi Ecosistemici legati all’acqua (Pacetti et. al., 2021, 2020, Castelli et al. 2020; iv) effetti della riduzione delle precipitazioni sulla produttività di impianti mino-hydro (Defina & Caporali 2018).
L’attività di ricerca, inoltre, riguarda l’analisi di frequenza regionale dei valori idrologici estremi. In tale ambito particolare attenzione riveste l’analisi di valori estremi di precipitazione (Caporali et al. 2018; 2008) anche mediante modellazione geoadditiva (Caporali et al. 2018; Bocci et al., 2013), l’analisi delle portate minime e la definizione probabilistica di indici di rischio di siccità per sistemi di approvvigionamento idrico (Rossi & Caporali 2012a;b, 2010a;b).
Nel 2016, in occasione del 50° anniversario dell’alluvione del 1966 a Firenze, e in precedenza, l’attività ha riguardato anche la ricostruzione dell’evento idrologico del 4 Novembre 1966 con particolare riferimento alla città di Firenze e al bacino idrografico del Fiume Arno a monte della città (Caporali 2016, Caporali et al., 2016). Anche l’evento in Versilia nel 1996 è stato modellato e integrato con dati storici ai fini della promozione della percezione del rischio delle calamità naturali (Pileggi et al., 2022; Caporali et al. 2011). Intensa, fino al 2015, è stata anche l’attività di ricerca applicata nel settore dell’alta formazione in ambito nazionale ed internazionale per l’accreditamento e la certificazione di qualità dei corsi di studio di Ingegneria (Caporali et al., 2015; 2014; 2013), lo sviluppo di curricula per la professione di ingegnere (Caporali & Tunesky editors, 2009; Caporali et al., 2014;2012), e i servizi di video-conferenza nell’alta formazione (Caporali & Trajkovik editors, 2012a,b; Trajkovik et al., 2010).
Per il DOTTORATO DI RICERCA dal 2001 partecipa al Collegio dei docenti del Dottorato Internazionale del DICEA, denominato attualmente “Civil and Environmental Engineering”, tra l’Università degli Studi di Firenze, la TU di Braunschweig (D) e l’Università degli Studi di Pisa. E’ stata Vice Coordinatore (07/2004 – 10/2012) del Collegio dei docenti del Dottorato di Ricerca in “Metodi e Tecnologie per il Monitoraggio Ambientale”, dell’Università degli Studi della Basilicata, in consorzio con le Università degli Studi di Firenze, di Genova e di Roma La Sapienza (dal XXI ciclo). Come tutor esterno al collegio ha partecipato al Dottorato di Ricerca in Geomatica e Sistemi Informativi Territoriali (2003 – 2007) dell’Università degli Studi di Trieste (XVIII ciclo, 1 dottore di ricerca); del Dottorato di Ricerca in Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze (cicli XIX e XX, 2 dottori di ricerca). Complessivamente nell’ambito dei collegi dei docenti di dottorato ai quali ha partecipato, è stata supervisor di 15 dottori di ricerca e co-tutor di 8 dottori di ricerca.
L'ATTIVITÀ DIDATTICA si svolge presso la Scuola di Ingegneria dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze, nell’ambito dei Corsi di Laurea di Ingegneria Civile, Edile e Ambientale.
E’ relatrice di numerose tesi dei Corsi di Laurea (oltre 170), anche con laureandi in mobilità ERAMUS, nell’ambito di accordi con università straniere su percorsi formativi condivisi e corsi master. Gli argomenti delle tesi seguite sono di idrologia e costruzioni idrauliche, monitoraggio e protezione idraulica del territorio, studi di impatto ambientale e valorizzazione del territorio. Intensa è inoltre l'attività seminariale ed organizzativa di corsi di formazione in ambito nazionale ed internazionale.
Partecipa (10/2020-) alle attività di EUniWell (https://www.euniwell.eu/) l’Università Europea per il Benessere, una delle 44 alleanze universitarie europee selezionate per essere finanziate dalla Commissione europea nell'ambito del programma ERASMUS+ nel 2020. Oltre a UNIFI, fanno attualmente parte di EUniWell le Università di Birmingham (Inghilterra), Colonia e Costanza (Germania), Linnaeus (Svezia), Murcia (Spagna), Nantes (Francia), Semmelweis (Ungheria) e l’università Nazionale Taras Shevchenko di Kiev (Ucraina). EUniWell è inoltre supportato da oltre 100 partner associati provenienti da tutti i settori della società.

L’attività di RICERCA SCIENTIFICA, sviluppata a livello nazionale ed internazionale, si colloca principalmente nel settore dell’idrologia e delle costruzioni idrauliche, con particolare riferimento a: valutazione degli impatti del cambiamento climatico sulle risorse idriche e il rischio alluvionale, eco-idrologia, monitoraggio e protezione dell’ambiente, definizione delle misure strutturali e non strutturali di mitigazione del rischio idrogeologico, analisi di frequenza regionale degli estremi idrologici, analisi del rischio idraulico delle infrastrutture di attraversamento fluviale, valorizzazione delle risorse idriche e del suolo, modellistica idro-sedimentologica a scala di bacino idrografico, risorsa idrica sostenibile, nesso acqua-cibo-energia e servizi ecosistemici legati all’acqua, la certificazione di qualità dei corsi di studio in ingegneria, lo sviluppo di curricula per la formazione degli ingegneri.

The SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, carried out both at national and international level, have been mainly developed in the field of hydrology and hydraulic structures. Most of her scientific communications, published on peer reviewed journals or national and international conferences proceedings, are synthetically referred here in the following, considering mostly of the publications of the recent period and few selected publications for the earlier period.
The recent research activity is developed mainly in the context of hydraulic risk as well as the water – energy – food and ecosystems nexus. Within the hydraulic risk analysis, the research activity is focused on structural (Isola et al., 2020) and non structural mitigation interventions (Lompi et al. 2022a; Mori et al. 2021; Lompi et al. 2021; Pileggi et al. 2020), in a city environment (Pacetti et al., 2022; 2020 Ivanov et al., 2021), with reference to design hydrological variables (Lompi et al., 2022b; Pampaloni et al., 2021). In the research activity the study of climate change impacts on the hydrological cycle components is deepened (Caporali et al. 2020, Fatichi et al., 2016; 2013, 2012a,b,c; 2011) as well as the statistical analysis of hydrological variables (Fatichi et al., 2009; Fatichi & Caporali, 2009; 2008). In this framework with reference to water – energy – food nexus, research activities has been focused on: i) definition of methods to estimate the effect of inundation on food security (Pacetti et al., 2017; 2019); ii) the reservoir sedimentation assessment and management with reference to water resources management (Pacetti et al., 2020; Becchi et al., 2009); iii) hydrological variable monitoring (Morbidelli et al., 2020); iv) Water related Ecosystems Services (Pacetti et. al., 2021, 2020, Castelli et al. 2020); v) the effects of rainfall regime changes on the productivity of mini-hydro plants (Defina & Caporali 2018).
Besides, research studies cope with the frequency analysis of hydrological extreme values. In this context particular attention is given to the analysis of rainfall extreme values (Caporali et al. 2018; 2008), also with the use of a geoadditive model (Caporali et al. 2018; Bocci et al., 2013), and to the investigation on regional analysis of streamflow extremes for low flow indices and the definition of probability indicators of water shortage in a water supply system (Rossi & Caporali 2012a;b, 2010a;b).
Moreover, in 2016, in the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1966 flood event in Florence, research activity has been developed, with reference to the meteorological event and to the estimate of the economic damage suffered by the territory after the flood (Caporali 2016, Caporali et al., 2016). The Versilia flood event on 1996 has been also modeled and integrated with diachronic data to promote the natural hazards perception (Pileggi et al., 2022; Caporali et al. 2011). Intense, up to 2015, has been also the research activity in the higher education field with particular attention to accreditation and quality assurance of engineering education (Caporali et al., 2015; 2014; 2013); curricula development for engineering profession (Caporali & Tunesky editors, 2009; Caporali et al., 2014;2012); Video-conferencing services in higher education (Caporali & Trajkovik editors, 2012a,b; Trajkovik et al., 2010).
DOCTORAL PROGRAMME ACTIVITIES
Since 2001 she participates to the DICEA Board of teachers of the International Doctorate Program on “Civil and Environmental Engineering”, among UNIFI, TU di Braunschweig (D) and University of Pisa. She has been Vice Coordinator (07/2004 – 10/2012) of the Board of teachers of the PhD course in Methods and Technologies for the Environmental Monitoring of the University of Basilicata, carried out in co‑operation with the University of Florence, the University of Genoa and Roma “La Sapienza” University (since XXI cycle). She has been External Supervisor (2003 – 2007) of the XVIII Cycle of the PhD “Geomatics and Geographical Information Systems” of the University of Trieste and of the XIX and XX Cycle of the PhD Course “Civil and Environmental Engineering” of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Firenze.Overall, within the boards of teacher to which she has participated, she has been main tutor of 15 doctoral candidates and co-tutor of 8 doctoral candidates.
The EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES are carried out at the School of engineering, University of Firenze, within the Degree Courses in Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering.
She is supervisor of several Degree Theses (over than 170), also of students in ERASMUS mobility and in the framework of agreements with foreign universities on shared training programs as well as master courses. All the supervised theses refer to hydrology and territory hydraulic protection, environmental impact studies and enhancement of the territory. She also participated at many seminars and workshops in the frame of training courses at national and international level.
She participates (10/2020-) to the activities of EUniWell (https://www.euniwell.eu/) the European University for Well‑Being ‑ EuniWell, one of 44 European University Alliances, selected for funding by the European Commission under the ERASMUS+ programme in 2020. In addition to UNIFI the Universities of Birmingham (UK), Cologne and Konstanz (Germany), Linnaeus (Sweden), Murcia (Spain), Nantes (France), Semmelweis (Hungary), and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Ukraine) are currently members of EUniWell. The SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, carried out both at national and international level, have been mainly developed in the field of hydraulic structures and hydrology, with specific reference to: climate change impacts assessment on water resources and flood risk, eco‑hydrology, environment monitoring and protection, definition of structural and non structural mitigation measures against hydrogeological disasters, regional frequency analysis of hydrological extremes, water resources and soil protection enhancement, hydraulic risk analyses related to rivers crossing infrastructures, hydro‑sedimentological modelling and sediment routing simulations at watershed scale, water-energy-food nexus and water related ecosystems services, quality assurance of degree course in engineering, curricula development in higher education of engineers.
Most of her publications (more than 150), published on peer reviewed journals or presented at national and international conferences, are developed on these research topics.
