Nel 1996 è entrato a far parte del Department of Mechanical Engineering della Kathoelieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgio, all'interno del progetto EU Brite Euram Project VAMP project (Vibro-Acoustic Modelling and Prediction of Transportation Vehicles).

Marco Pierini graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1991 and obtained the PhD in Machine Design in 1994. In 1994 he was a guest researcher at Brüel Acoustics, Holte, Denmark within the EU Human Capital and Mobility "MONICA" (Methods on noise identification control activities) project.
In 1995 he firstly moved to the Centro Ricerche FIAT (CRF), Turin, Italy, where he was involved in a project on vibro-acustics optimization in the automotive field; then he was a guest researcher at Mechanics and Nuclear Engineering Department of the University of Manchester, U.K. where he continued his activity in the field of NVH within the EU Human Capital and Mobility "MONICA" project.
In 1996 he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Kathoelieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, within the EU Brite Euram Project VAMP project (Vibro-Acoustic Modelling and Prediction of Transportation Vehicles).
He then returned to Florence where he was first appointed as an assistant professor (1998) and then as an associate professor (2002). Since 2018 he is full professor.
Since 2002 while continuing his activity in the field of NVH, he broadened his interests to transport safety, and he was among the promoters and fonders of MOVING (www.moving.unifi.it) that he is currently coordinating.
Since 2007 he is also coordinating the activity of the sustainable mobility team which deals with the different aspects of people and merchandise movement. The focus is mainly on urban mobility and vehicle electrification.
He is currently coordinating several research projects funded by the EC, at national, regional and local level, as well as project founded by the industry.
