Marco Biffi graduated in Florence in History of Italian Language (110/110L) and subsequently obtained the “Perfezionamento” (PhD) at the Scuola Normale in Pisa (70/70L). He was given a research grant by the Department of Italian Studies of the University of Florence from 2000 to 2004 and then a contract as a fixed-term researcher from 2004 to 2007.From 2001 to 2007 he has worked as adjunct professor for the course “Elements of information technology for Linguistics” and “Linguistic informatics” at the University of Florence, and from 2004 to 2008 as adjunct professor of “Humanistic Informatics” at the University for Foreigners Siena. From 2007 to 2014 he has worked as a researcher at the Faculty (now Department) of Letters of the University of Florence and he was aggregated professor in “Italian Linguistics” in the Bachelor course in “Human Sciences for Communication”, in "History of Italian Language" in the Bachelor course of "History" and in "Italian Linguistics and Informatics" in the Master course in "Modern Philology".Since December 2014 he is Associate Professor of Italian Linguistics.He is member of the Scientific Board of Phd program in "Filologia, Letteratura Italiana, Linguistica" at the University of Florence.Since 2010 he is member of the Scientific Committee of CLIEO (Center for Historical Linguistics and Theory: Italian, Eastern European languages) of the University of Florence.His research activity is centered mainly on the diachronic study of the technical language (especially that of architecture and machines), of broadcasted Italian (via radio and TV as well as computer-mediated written language), of Linguistic Informatics applied to the history of Language. To the study of these subjects he has added the analysis of the language of specific authors: Boccaccio, Leon Battista Alberti, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Leonardo da Vinci, Benedetto Varchi. He has taken part in many FIRB and PRIN projects of national relevance supervising the creation of multimedia electronic corpora of broadcasted radio- and TV language, and of databases of written Italian of the XIX Century.In 2012 he was Principal Investigator of the national project PRIN 2008 "Il portale dell'italiano televisivo: corpora, generi e stili communicative" (For a web portal of the Italian language of television: corpora, genres and communicative styles).From 2012 to 2013 he was Chief of the Research Unit of CLIEO in national project FIRB 2006 "VIVIT: VIVI ITALIANO. Archivio digitale integrato di materiali didattici, testi e documentazioni iconografiche e multimediali per la conoscenza all'estero del patrimonio linguistico e storico-culturale italiano, con particolare riguardo e destinazione a italiani all’estero di seconda e terza generation" (VIVIT: VIVI ITALIANO. Digital integrated archive of teaching resources, texts and iconographic materials aiming to promote the knowledge of Italian linguistic, historical and cultural heritage abroad, with special regard and destination to the second and third generation of Italian immigrants).He is also responsible for the project "La scrittura istituzionale e la comunicazione con il pubblico. Per una comunicazione scritta efficace: dagli atti amministrativi alla scrittura Web - SICOP" (Institutional writing and communication with the public. For an effective written communication: from the administrative acts to the writing Web), funded by the University of Florence, co-funded by the Region of Tuscany, POR project CRO ESF 2007-2013 Axis IV - Human Capital.From 2014 to 2017 he was Chief of the Research Unit of University of Florence in national project PRIN 2012 "Corpus di riferimento per un Nuovo Vocabolario dell'Italiano moderno e contemporaneo. Fonti documentarie, retrodatazioni, innovazioni" (A Reference Corpus for a New Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Italian. Databases, backdating, innovations), PI: Claudio Marazzini.Now he is Chief of the Research Unit of University of Florence in national project PRIN 2015 "Vocabolario dinamico dell'italiano post-unitario" (Dynamic Dictionary of Post-Unitarian Italian Language), PI: Claudio Marazzini.Together with Massimo Fanfani he has directed the project “The Lexicography of the Crusca Online”, i.e. the electronic version of the five editions of the “Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca”, online since 2005; and together with Paola Manni he directed the “Leonardian Glossary. Nomenclature of the machines in the codexes Madrid and Atlantic”, available inside the portal “e-Leo. History of Science and Technology Digital Archive” (www.leonardodigitale.com) and also in print (Olschki, 2011).Since 1996 Marco Biffi collaborates with the Accademia della Crusca in linguistic and computational linguistic activities: since 2002 he is the person in charge for the website www.accademiadellacrusca.it (which he also designed, as well as directing its creation, in 2002 and 2012); and since 2004, year of its constitution, he is also the person in charge for the Information Technology Center of the Accademia. He cooperated as IT expert for the creation of several databases (“Fabbrica dell’italiano-The Factory of Italian”: www.fabbricadellitaliano.it; “Fondo dei citati-Collection of the quoted texts”: www.citatinellacrusca.it; “Biblioteca Digitale-Digital Library”: www.bdcrusca.it; “Archivio Digitale-Digital Archive”: www.adcrusca.it); and has been, or is, tecnical and scientific coordinator of several projects “Strumenti informatici per la ricerca e la consulenza linguistica sull’italiano - SIRCLI” (Informatic instruments for research and linguistic advice on Italian) (2004-2005)”, “Archivio informatico integrato: Servizi bibliografici, Lessicografia storica” (Integrated digital archive: Bibliographical services, Historical lexicography) (2006-2007), “Dalle carte all’informatica: Archivio storico, Archivio moderno, Sito web” (From papers to Information technology: Historical archive, Modern archive, Website) (2007-2008), “Archivio Iconografico Digitale dell’Accademia della Crusca” (Iconographic digital archive of the Accademia della Crusca) (2007-2008), “Metamotore di Accesso agli Archivi Digitali dell’Accademia della Crusca” (Meta-search Enigine for accessing the Digital Archives of the Accademia della Crusca) (2008-2009), “Banche dati ottocentesche per lo studio dell’Italiano” (Data bases for the study of Italian language in the XIX century) (2009-2010), “Proverbi italiani. Since 2016 he is President of the CdS "Lettere".
