Mario Biggeri is Associate Professor in Development Economics at the Department of Economics and Management at the University of Florence and Academic Director of the BA in Economic Development, International Socio-sanitary Cooperation and Conflict Management.
His research interests include local and industrial development, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), SMEs clusters, sustainable human development, international cooperation, social innovation children well-being, persons with disabilities well-being and impact evaluation.
He has worked for UNICEF IRC and for UNDP on territorial human development. He is a Fellow of the Human Development Capability Association (HDCA).
He is Scientific Director of the university research Action Research for CO-development and Director of the Scientific and Ethical Committee of the Yunus Social Business Center University of Florence.
He has published extensively in a broad range of international journals and he is the co-author and/or co-editor of twenty books

MAINRESEARCHINTERESTS and ISSUES
Come risulta dal complesso delle principali pubblicazioni, indicate nelle sezioni successive, le attività di ricerca hanno riguardato la gran parte delle aree tematiche del settore disciplinare di Economia Applicata (Secs-P/06) accentrando l’attenzione su aspetti sia teorici che empirici.
La prima area di ricerca ha riguardato lo studio dell’economia dei settori produttivi e dei territori con attenzione alle attività produttive manifatturiere.
Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata alle piccole e medie imprese e cluster industriali nei paesi in via di sviluppo e nei paesi emergenti (BRICS). In questo ambito la Cina è stato ed è il paese di riferimento nel percorso di ricerca sin dal 1992 quando ha seguito corsi specifici presso le università di Reading e di Oxford.
Successivamente il candidato ha rivolto l’attenzione all'analisi in campi d’indagine quali le configurazioni produttive dei sistemi locali industriali (comprese le relative value chain) e dei servizi socio-sanitari (con ampia presenza di attività informali) e le dinamiche del mercato del lavoro (formale-informale) nel settore manifatturiero incluso il lavoro minorile. In questo ambito di ricerca l’India è il paese principale di riferimento nell'analisi delle politiche a livello sia teorico che empirico.
Una parte importante della ricerca ha successivamente riguardato l'analisi e la valutazione dell'impatto delle politiche economiche e sociali a livello locale incluse le imprese manifatturiere etniche e i servizi sociosanitari a livello locale basati sull'azione collettiva.
Il candidato ha, infine, approfondito l’assetto del territorio e le politiche pubbliche nei processi di sviluppo industriale e sociale con una prospettiva di sviluppo umano e sostenibile legando, in modo innovativo, l'approccio distrettuale di Giacomo Becattini con l'approccio delle Capability di Amartya Sen. Queste ricerche di carattere teorico hanno riguardato, da un punto di vista empirico, principalmente l’Italia e la Toscana ma anche programmi di cooperazione internazionale territoriale delle Nazioni Unite (UNDP) basati sulle agenzie di sviluppo locale.
Negli ultimi anni il candidato ha ampliato la ricerca indirizzandola anche verso l’economia delle imprese sociali e i processi di innovazione tecnologica.
