The da Vinci European Biobank (daVEB) is a research biobank with repository and laboratory for the processing of samples located at the Sciences Campus of Sesto Fiorentino with data processing facilities at SIAF.

Profile

It is configured as a research service unit, through the collection, storage and distribution according to quality procedures of biological samples and data associated with them.

Biological samples are human and non-human genetic materials, proteins, cells, tissues and biological fluids. The data is the biological information associated with the sample and, in the case of samples of human origin, the clinical information about the donor.

The repository is organized in two areas for cryopreservation, one with mechanical freezers at -80 ° C, the other with tanks for storage in nitrogen vapors (at temperatures < -170 ° C) in a monitored environment 24/7. The preliminary operations for insertion in the biobank and the distribution of the samples take place in a dedicated laboratory adjacent to the repository (daVEB-Lab). The daVEB-Lab is equipped with the necessary platforms for human cell cultures and automatic extraction of nucleic acids.

daVEB is ISO9001 certified since 2011 for the part concerning the collection, storage and distribution of biological samples and of the data associated with them for scientific research (CSQ Certificate No. 9122.FFFI; IQNet Certificate No. IT-79101).

It has implemented a management system that guarantees high standards of conservation, including aspects of traceability, and operates according to the law regarding ethical aspects and privacy protection.

It is a partner of the European biobank consortium (BBMRI-ERIC) through the national node BBMRI.it; its catalogue of samples is part of the European network.

Services

daVEB services can be accessed both by internal users of the University of Florence (UI) and users of other public or private institutions (external users, EU).

The main activity of daVEB is aimed at preserving collections of samples and data for research activities. The service is carried out through the following methods:

  • Creation of collections for research: daVEB maintains collections made available to the international scientific community by the groups that have organized the collection. The service is free and is accessed by stipulating specific agreements after evaluation of the characteristics of the proposed collection. The possibility of preservation of samples at daVEB for future research purposes must be provided in the informed consent at the time the samples are collected, subject to authorization by the competent ethics committee. Request form (pdf)
  • Samples distribution for research: the distribution of samples to third parties takes place following the evaluation of a research project, after careful consideration of the scientific relevance and ethical aspects, and after having acquired the consent of the researcher responsible for the collection of samples. Price list related to this service (based on the principle of cost-recovery). Request form (pdf)
  • Third party storage: the sample storage service and, if requested, the associated data is provided on the basis of a price list (with facilitated tariffs for UI). The service is accessed through an application form detailing the dimensions and characteristics of the collection to be archived. The biobank accepts the request based on its availability of storage space. The samples remain the exclusive property of the depositor; the biobank assumes no responsibility for ethical aspects (approval of the ethics committee for collection, informed consent, privacy, etc.). The costs for this service can be found in the price list. Request form (pdf)

In addition, daVEB can also provide the following services, with prices to be agreed on a case-by-case basis:

  • DNA extraction from biological samples
  • Human cell cultures
  • Disaster recovery plan for small biobanks

Quality Control

The da Vinci European BioBank has decided to implement and maintain, in compliance with the UNI EN ISO 9001 Standard, a Quality Management System to meet the needs of the sector requiring the achievement and maintenance of defined quality standards, achievable through the development of a culture of quality, aimed at improvements in terms of efficiency and reduction of costs deriving from non-quality. The policy pursued is the one described in our "Quality Manual".
