The University of Florence has developed interdisciplinary research and learning paths in the field of European studies, whose value has been recognized since 1999 by the European Commission through the funding of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.

The University of Florence is considered a focal point of expertise and knowledge on European Union issues. It brings together high-level experts to make connections across disciplines and resources in European studies and to form links with academic institutions in other countries.

The Centre of Excellence is directed by Laura Leonardi.

Previously, Antonio Varsori, Leonardo Morlino, Massimiliano Guderzo directed the Centre.

Jean Monnet

At the University level the Centre coordinates, in collaboration with the other university institutions, all study and research activities on European integration, promoting projects for modules and Jean Monnet chairs.

In 2017, the Interdepartmental Research Centre, was established with the aim of strengthening the relationship between teaching and interdisciplinary research in the context of European and international projects. It also promotes, in collaboration with the European Documentation Centre (EDC) the dissemination of knowledge and information on the results of these activities to a non-academic public, addressing specific professional figures (policy makers and local and national civil servants, journalists, teachers, officials of non-governmental organizations and associations) and the general public.
