Theoretical introduction and laboratory use of detectors commonly used in subnucelar physics through measurements based on the detection of cosmic rays. Introduction to the control and data acquisition software LabView™. Introduction to plastic scintillators. Characterization of a scintillator-photomultiplier system: measurement of the efficiency and collection of light. Use of plastic scintillators and photomultipliers for time measurements. Realization of trigger configurations and measurement of their efficiency. Introduction to Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). Study of SiPM signals and of the "dark count rate". Detection of light in combination with a plastic scintillator with light collection through a "wavelength shifter" fiber. Introduction to magnetic spectrometers. Introduction to silicon microstrip detectors. Measurements with a magnetic spectrometer with silicon microstrip detectors: reconstruction of tracks and alignment. Introduction to gas detectors with focus on the multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC). Characterization in the laboratory of a MWPC: measurement of efficiency, gain and time resolution
