Course Content
The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to the most relevant concepts, topics and authors of the history of Western aesthetics (from classical age up to the nineteenth century). We will also analyze and comment two masterpieces of Western aesthetics, Plato’s “Symposium" (with its discussion of the ideal Form of beauty) and Immanuel Kant’s third “Critique" (only the section "The Analytic of the Beautiful", with its analysis of the judgement of taste).

Learning Objectives
Knowledge: The course aims to analyze and discuss some of the most relevant issues, questions and perspectives in the history of Western aesthetics (classical age, medieval age, Renaissance, up to the nineteenth-century post-hegelian aesthetic theories). Skills: Students will familiarize themselves with the main issues, problems, authors and theoretical approaches in the history of Western aesthetics and will improve their analytical thinking skills and interpretative skills, thanks to the reading and discussion of Plato’s and Kant’s texts. Behavior: Students will improve their knowledge of basic research tools such as research catalogs, specialized websites, research libraries and will practice their argument skills.

Type of Assessment
Oral exam. The exam will be divided into two parts: a first part on Storia dell’estetica occidentale (2-3 questions), a second part on Plato and Kant. Duration of the exam: about 20 minutes.

The course is divided into two parts: a first part on the main themes, topics, issues and paradigms in the history of Western aesthetics; a second part dealing with Plato’s “Symposium" and Kant’s "Analytic of the Beautiful" (from his "Critique of the Power of Judgement").
