Course Content
The first part of the course is devoted to the fundamentals of spectroscopy, including interpretation and applications of molecular spectroscopy to biochemical systems. Concepts and principles of electronic absorption and emission, circular dichroism, vibrational spectroscopy (IR, FTIR, Raman and resonance Raman) are given. The second part is devoted to thermodynamics. The main topics include chemical themodynamics and equilibria, change of state, kinetic theory and chemical kinetics.

Learning Objectives
Understanding the principles of molecular spectroscopy to facilitate its use in the identification and analysis of the structure of drugs, biomolecules, and the structure-function relationship.
Understanding of the fundamentals of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics to facilitate their application to biochemical systems, using empirical knowledge on the macroscopic behavior of matter and the properties known at the atomic, molecular and spectroscopic levels.
The first part of the course provides the basis of the modern Molecular Spectroscopy to be applied on biological molecules and drugs.
The second part of the course provides the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics, (Enthalpy, Entropy, Gibbs Energy), Thermochemistry, Kinetics to be applied on physical and chemical reactions.

Teaching Methods
Lessons of theory and training consisting of the solution of numerical excercices.
Lessons of theory will be held by using board and supported through the projection of slides which are provided to the students in pdf format.
Numerical exercises will be solved in several manners: together with the teacher, in small groups of 2-4 students and individually.
Optional sessions will be offer for the solution of numerical exercices.
At the end of the course a guided tour of the spectroscopy laboratory will be organized. Various instruments will be shown and it will be illustrated how the properties of the material can be studied with spectroscopy, based on the lessons learned.

There are three written tests in progress during the course on: 1) Principles of spectroscopy and symmetry; Electronic spectroscopies: UV-Vis, Fluorescence, phosphorescence, CD;
2) Vibrational spectroscopies: IR, FTIR, Raman, resonant Raman, microRaman; principles of structural chemistry: X-ray diffraction;
3) Thermochemistry, phase equilibria, kinetics.
The ongoing tests are valid until February of the current academic Year. For those students who have passed the tests in progress and have passed Physics, General and inorganic Chemistry, and Computational Chemistry, the final exam consists of an about 20 minutes oral exam on a topic chosen by the teacher.
