Research data are factual records (numerical data, symbols, text, images or sounds) used as primary sources of scientific research commonly accepted in research communities as necessary to validate the results.

They can be raw or processed and structured into datasets.

Data can be defined as "any information that has been collected, observed, generated, or created to validate a scientific".

Data created by research are resources that can be used and reused for scientific and educational purposes.

This is why more and more funding programs (national and international, public and private) and scientific journals are recommending or requiring researchers to deposit research data and make them searchable.

Sharing data:

  • encourages scientific research and debate
  • promotes innovation and potential new uses for data
  • increases collaborations between data users and data creators
  • maximizes transparency and accountability
  • allows control of research results
  • encourages improvement and validation of research methods
  • reduces the cost of duplication of data collection
  • increases the impact and visibility of research
  • promotes the research that created the data and its results
  • provides important resources for educatio and training
