Sustainability, Florence among the "greenest" universities

According to the 2025 UI Green Metric international ranking

The University of Florence confirms its position among the Italian universities most committed to environmental sustainability. This is shown by the 2025 UI Green Metric international ranking, which places Unifi 12th at the national level—a position the University has steadily maintained for three years—and 212th worldwide out of 1,745 participating universities, marking significant growth compared to previous editions.

Unifi’s overall score has improved compared to previous years, reaching 8,097.5 points, up from 7,985 in both 2023 and 2024. In percentage terms, Unifi has shown steady progress over the past three years, moving from the top 14.62% (2023) to 13.74% (2024) and down to 12.15% in 2025.

“As in previous years, we are seeing a consolidation of our commitment to sustainability,” commented rector Alessandra Petrucci. “The increase in participating universities—over 260 more than in 2024—makes the stability of our national ranking and the growth in our overall score even more significant. It is a sign of the strength of the University’s work in integrating sustainability into development strategies and everyday practices.

In detail, the University has significantly improved its performance in the Energy and Climate Change indicator, rising from 1,285 points in 2024 to 1,460 in 2025, and has also recorded a slight increase in Transportation (from 1,250 to 1,275). Performance remains stable for Setting and Infrastructure (1,200), Waste (1,575), and Water (1,000).

In addition to measures aimed at energy savings, the rational use of resources, and the promotion of sustainable mobility, the University of Florence carries out training and awareness‑raising activities throughout the year through its Green Office, helping to spread a culture of sustainable development within the academic community.
