The University expands its educational offer

The single cycle degree programme in Medicine and Surgery — taught entirely in English and unique in Tuscany — is proving a great success, receiving 260 applications for 50 available places. Enrolment is now closed for this programme as well as for the first cycle degree programme in Molecular Biotechnology and Sustainable Production.

Meanwhile, applications remain open for the first cycle degree programme in Geological Hazards and Environmental Sustainability and the second cycle degree programme in A-GreenTech – Advanced Technologies for Green Agriculture.

"Society is changing, and Unifi must understand these transformations by updating the educational offer. The four new degree programmes introduced by the University of Florence arise from a dialogue between research and the needs of society and the local area, aiming to prepare new generations to face challenges that require increasingly complex skills and interdisciplinary contributions," comments rector Alessandra Petrucci. "In this context, the strong interest in Medicine and Surgery stands out — the first single cycle degree programme in Medicine taught entirely in English in Tuscany, with applications exceeding available places. An expanding educational offer means precisely this: giving students more opportunities to build their future and contribute to that of society."

Medicine and Surgery
The single cycle degree programme in Medicine and Surgery is the first programme in Medicine and Surgery taught entirely in English in Tuscany. It prepares students for the medical profession and strengthens the University’s international outlook, attracting students from abroad.

Molecular Biotechnology and Sustainable Production
The new first cycle degree programme teaches how to use organisms, cells, and biological molecules to develop products and improve production processes. The programme combines biology, chemistry, and agricultural sciences, connecting the study of living systems to applications in industry, agriculture, and environmental protection. The skills acquired can be used, for example, to study molecules for research and industry, develop innovative agricultural practices, and improve crop yield and quality, helping to reduce the environmental impact of production.

Geological Hazards and Environmental Sustainability
The new first cycle degree programme, taught entirely in English, combines in-person and distance learning activities. It trains professionals to analyse, predict, and manage natural and environmental risks related to geological phenomena.

Students study the Earth and its processes to understand what makes a territory vulnerable and the potential impacts on people and the environment. The programme addresses a growing demand for expertise, including in non-European countries, where these topics are still limited in university education.

A-GreenTech – Advanced Technologies for Green Agriculture
The new second cycle degree programme, combining in-person and distance learning activities, merges agricultural sciences with advanced digital technologies to design more efficient, sustainable production systems capable of adapting to environmental changes. The programme teaches how to use tools such as sensors, remote territory observation systems, artificial intelligence, and automation to collect data, interpret it, and guide decision-making in agriculture. Training also covers environmental impact assessment of production and traceability — enabling products to be tracked throughout the supply chain. The objective is to prepare professionals to support farms, businesses, and public administrations towards more efficient and sustainable agriculture.

With these four new additions, the University of Florence strengthens an educational offer that integrates diverse disciplines and responds to the needs of society, preparing students to understand ongoing changes and address them in their future careers.
