Health and Medical Care

If you reside in another Italian region and stay in Florence for study purposes for more than three months, you can apply for temporary registration with the Regional Health Service of Tuscany (Servizio Sanitario Regionale della Toscana - SSR). To do so, you must complete the designated form, stating "study purposes (per motivi di studio)" as the reason and specifying your degree programme.

You can submit your application:

• In person, at the registry offices of the competent local health authority (ASL) health centres, bringing a valid ID document and your health card (tessera sanitaria);
• By email, sending the form together with a scan of your ID document and health card (tessera sanitaria) to the competent office for your local address.

Registration is renewable annually and allows you to choose a general practitioner (medico di medicina generale) in Florence. If you require occasional medical care, you may contact the out-of-hours medical service (Guardia Medica) or a general practitioner, paying the required fee for an occasional visit.

If you come from a European Union (EU) country, the European Economic Area (EEA), or the Swiss Confederation and are not registered with the health service of your home country (upon presentation of the E104/S041 form), you can opt to register voluntarily with the Regional Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Regionale - SSR).

Cost

If you have no dependent family members, the contribution is 700 euro per calendar year.

How to make the payment

Payment must be made exclusively via the F24 payment form (modello F24) using:

• Tax code (codice tributo): 8846
• Regional code (codice regionale): 17
• Payment reference (causale): "Contributo S.S.R. anno …" [insert year]

Documents to submit

You must send the following in a single PDF file:

• tax code (codice fiscale);
• self-certification of degree programme enrolment;
• F24 payment receipt;
• E104/S041 form;
• completed statistical form.

If you hold a residence permit for study purposes, you can choose between two options.

Option A – Voluntary registration with the National Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN)

Option B – Mutualitas Health Insurance Policy

If you participate in international mobility programmes or spend a study period abroad, you can take out the Mutualitas - Travel for University policy, designed for the university community.

Who it is for

• students up to 35 years of age;
• researchers and professors up to 45 years of age;

both residents or domiciles in Italy travelling abroad, and residents abroad carrying out study or research activities in Italy.

What it covers 

The policy, valid for up to 365 days per individual trip, includes:

• travel assistance;
• telephone medical consultation;
• medical transport;
• repatriation of the insured person;
• travel expenses for a family member in the event of hospitalisation;
• reimbursement of medical, hospital, and surgical expenses abroad up to 500,000 euro;
• pharmaceutical expenses up to 2,000 euro;
• coverage for lost or damaged baggage;
• accident cover with compensation in the event of death or permanent disability.

Before incurring any expenses, you must contact the Emergency Operations Centre on +39 02 24128658. Otherwise, reimbursement may not be granted.

Students at the University of Florence are automatically insured free of charge under third-party liability (responsabilità civile) insurance RCT/O no. 420262484 – Generali Italia. The insurance covers damage unintentionally caused to third parties resulting in death, personal injury, or property damage due to an accidental event occurring during official institutional activities.

What is not covered

Damage arising from outpatient care services and diagnostic or treatment activities is excluded.

When you are covered

Insurance coverage applies:

• while you are on University premises for study purposes or participating in sports and recreational activities organised by the University;
• during study, research, or internship activities conducted outside the University on behalf of the University;
• during periods of study, research, or internship at other universities, in Italy or abroad.

Who is covered

The policy also includes:

• part-time student collaborators and tutors;
• holders of study or research scholarships;
• scholars admitted to University facilities for voluntary or professional development activities;
• interns;
• students enrolled in first- and second-level Professional Master's programmes, as well as advanced, vocational, and continuing education courses;
• participants in training activities, internships, and traineeships organised by the University, including those in collaboration with public and private bodies;
• research fellows, Ph.D. students, and specialisation candidates;
• international students present as part of international programmes, projects, and exchanges.

If you study at Unifi, you are covered by accident insurance policy no. F2400026375-LB – Lloyd's Insurance Company SA, the cost of which is fully borne by the University. An accident is defined as an accidental, violent, and external event causing ascertainable physical injury resulting in death, permanent disability, or temporary incapacity.

When you are covered

The policy is valid during official institutional activities and also covers commuting risk (rischio in itinere).

Covered activities include:

• teaching and practical activities;
• curricular and extracurricular internships;
• international programmes, such as Erasmus;
• activities organised by the University, including those in collaboration with public and private entities, provided they are formally authorised.

Who is covered

The policy covers:

• students enrolled in degree programmes at the University of Florence;
• research fellows, scholarship holders, Ph.D. students, and specialisation candidates;
• students enrolled in Professional Master's programmes and advanced training courses;
• interns;
• international students present under mobility agreements and programmes;
• candidates taking practical tests for degree programmes in Sports Sciences;
• candidates taking State Licensing Examinations during the tests.

If you are spending a period of study or research abroad, or if you are an incoming international student, researcher, or academic staff member in Florence, you can activate dedicated insurance coverage through Mutualitas, selected by the University of Florence through the insurance broker MARSH. This policy can serve as an alternative to registration with the National Health Service (SSN) and can be purchased directly online via the Mutualitas portal.

Who is eligible

The coverage is intended for:

• students, including Ph.D. students;
• researchers;
• academic staff;

both residents or individuals domiciled in Italy travelling abroad, and residents abroad staying in Italy for study or research purposes.

Age limits

The policy is available to:

• students up to 35 years of age (inclusive);
• researchers and professors up to 45 years of age (inclusive) at the time of policy issuance.

Before purchasing the policy

We recommend that you carefully review the available documentation, which covers:

• policy guarantees and assistance benefits;
• maximum payouts / policy limits;
• exclusions;
• claims procedures.

Important

In case of need, it is essential to contact the insurance company by telephone before incurring any medical or pharmaceutical expenses. Failure to contact the insurer in advance may compromise the activation of assistance services and the subsequent reimbursement of expenses.
