Entry and residence permit

Entry and residence permit procedures for students enroled in a Ph.D. programme.

EU citizens enrolled in Ph.D. programmes are not required to apply for a residence permit in Italy; registering with the Registry Office (Anagrafe) of their municipality (Comune) of residence is sufficient.

Residency registration is compulsory for stays exceeding three months.

Required documentation:

• identity document;
• proof of sufficient financial resources for the stay (self-certification is accepted);
• proof of a valid health insurance policy covering medical expenses;
• enrolment certificate for the Ph.D. programme.

The Municipality will issue a receipt confirming that the residency registration application has been submitted.

Non-EU citizens must apply to the Italian Embassy or competent Consulate in their home country for an entry visa for study purposes (type D for postgraduate study), valid for stays exceeding three months.

To obtain an entry visa, candidates must also pre-registation on the Universitaly portal.

Following the publication of the ranking lists, successful candidates (with or without a scholarship) and supernumerary admitted candidates must request an admission letter by emailing dottorato(AT)unifi.it in order to be granted an entry visa.

Non-EU students admitted to Ph.D. programmes must apply for a residence permit within 8 working days of their arrival in Italy by submitting the required documentation ("kit") at a Post Office (Poste Italiane); further information and costs are available on the Poste Italiane website. After submitting the kit, candidates will be notified of the appointment date at the Immigration Office (Ufficio Stranieri) of the Police Headquarters (Questura) for the issuance of their residence permit for study purposes (which must be renewed annually).
