Interrupting or resuming your studies

Do you need to temporarily interrupt your university studies, wish to withdraw from your programme, or would like to resume an academic record that was previously interrupted?

Before making a decision, you can consult the University’s guidance and re‑orientation services to receive support in assessing your academic path and the possible alternatives.

If you have interrupted your university studies and wish to resume them, you can request the reinstatement of your academic record (ricongiungimento della carriera). This allows you to reactivate the university record that was previously interrupted and continue your study programme.

How to submit your request

You must submit the following to your Student Administation Career Office:

  1. the IS_03 form, available on the Student Forms webpage;
  2. the required documentation;
  3. proof of the payments due.

Costs

A fee of 155 euro is required for each academic year in which you were not enrolled. If you interrupted your studies for documented serious health reasons, you will only need to pay the 16 euro stamp duty for each academic year of interruption.

You must also pay the enrolment fee for the current academic year within the established deadlines. These payments must be made in a single instalment. If the enrolment fee for the current academic year is paid after the deadlines, an additional administrative charge of 100 euro is required.

Suspending your academic record allows you to temporarily interrupt your studies and resume them later without closing your university record.

If you are enrolled in a first (bachelor’s), second (master’s) or single‑cycle (master’s) degree programme, you can request suspension before:

  • to undertake voluntary military service or attend Italian military training institutes;
  • to carry out civil service;
  • to enrol in university programmes or training pathways worth at least 60 credits at other universities, schools or higher institutes with a special regulatory framework;
  • to enrol in teacher‑training programmes worth at least 60 credits;
  • to benefit from a research fellowship (assegno di ricerca).

If you are enrolled in a Unifi Ph.D. programme, you may request suspension in order to attend a teacher‑training programme.

The suspension period:

  • lasts for the entire duration of the course or training pathway you are attending;
  • does not prevent you from accessing student‑support benefits;
  • is not counted in the calculation of the years that may lead to loss of student status;
  • does not interrupt the calculation of the years relevant for the regular progression of your academic record.

During the suspension you can not:

  • sit exams;
  • acquire attendance;
  • submit or amend your study plan;
  • request credit recognition;
  • submit an application for programme change or transfer;
  • take part in the Erasmus+ programme;
  • apply for part‑time collaboration calls;
  • request fee exemptions or financial benefits;
  • enrol as a part‑time student;
  • graduate.

How to submit your request

The suspension request must be submitted to your Student Administation Career Office before enrolling in the course or training pathway for which you are requesting suspension.

The request:

  • must be submitted using the IS_02 form, available on the Student Forms page;
  • must be submitted again for each academic year of suspension, within the ordinary enrolment deadlines.

Costs

For each academic year of suspension, you must pay the stamp duty, the regional fee and an administrative charge of 100 euro. During the suspension you do not have to pay the university fees for the suspended Unifi programme.

If you have already renewed your ordinary enrolment before requesting suspension, the fees you have paid can be refunded only if you have not carried out any academic‑record activities relating to the suspension year (such as exams, recordings or administrative requests).

Reactivating your academic record

You must request the reactivation of your academic record:

  • after obtaining the qualification for which you were granted suspension;
  • or if you withdraw from the programme attended during the suspension.

To reactivate your academic record, you must submit the IS_03 form — available on the Student Forms page — to your Student Administrative Career Office.

You must be up to date with the payments relating to the suspension years and pay the first instalment of the fees for the current academic year.

If you do not meet the requirements for requesting suspension, you must submit a withdrawal request and pay an administrative charge of 100 euro.

  • in caso di nascita o adozione di un figlio fino ai tre anni del bambino (la richiesta può essere fatta da entrambi i genitori);
  • per gravi motivi di salute certificati.

Durante il periodo di interruzione:

  • non puoi sostenere esami o acquisire frequenze;
  • non puoi presentare o modificare il piano di studi;
  • non puoi richiedere riconoscimenti di attività formative;
  • non puoi presentare domanda di passaggio o trasferimento;
  • non puoi partecipare al programma Erasmus+;
  • non puoi richiedere agevolazioni economiche o iscrizione part-time;
  • non puoi laurearti.

L’interruzione:

  • può durare per più anni accademici;
  • non impedisce di accedere ai benefici per il diritto allo studio;
  • non viene conteggiata nel calcolo degli anni che possono portare alla decadenza dagli studi;
  • non interrompe il conteggio degli anni per la regolarità degli studi;

Come fare domanda

Puoi presentare la domanda in qualsiasi momento dell’anno tramite il portale GCS.
La procedura è disponibile nella sezione: Carriera > Domanda di chiusura carriera. Al termine della procedura verrà generata la tassa di 116 euro.
