Transferring to or from the University of Florence

Transferring to the University of Florence

If you are studying at another university and wish to transfer to the University of Florence, you must first check the deadlines and procedures for transfers set by your home university.

The University of Florence accepts the documentation sent by the home university until December. After that, you may submit an incoming transfer request.

By transferring:

  • you enrol at the University of Florence;
  • you may request recognition of the exams you have already taken;
  • your academic record will be assessed by the new degree programme.

Procedures vary depending on the type of programme (unrestricted or restricted‑access), the admission year, and the availability of places.

If you are applying to transfer to a first (bachelor’s) or a single‑cycle (master’s) degree programme, before submitting your request you must:

  • check on the School’s website and in the programme regulations whether an initial knowledge assessment test is required;
  • if required, take the test according to the procedures indicated by the programme;
  • check any additional requirements that may apply.

If you are applying to transfer to a second (master’s) cycle degree programme, you must first request an assessment from the programme’s academic body in order to obtain clearance (nulla osta - the authorisation that allows the transfer to the new second (master’s) cycle degree programme).

If the assessment identifies an academic deficiency, you cannot complete the transfer until you obtain the required credits within the established deadlines.

If the assessment identifies an academic deficiency, you cannot complete the transfer until you obtain the required credits within the established deadlines.

What happens to the exams you have already taken:

  • the new degree programme will review them;
  • some exams or credits may be recognised;
  • additional learning requirements may be assigned.

After completing the transfer, you cannot return to your previous degree programme before one academic year has passed, unless there are serious reasons.

Procedures vary depending on the type of programme (unrestricted‑access or restricted‑access), the admission year, and the availability of places.

Restricted‑access degree programmes have a limited number of available places. To complete the transfer, you must follow specific procedures and deadlines, which vary depending on the admission year.

To transfer to the first year, you must:

  • take part in the selection procedure required by the programme;
  • sit any admission test that may be required;
  • follow the procedures and deadlines set out in the admission call.

To transfer to years after the first, you must:

  • consult the admission calls to check access procedures, the number of available places, and the evaluation criteria;
  • consult the admission calls for nationally or locally restricted‑access degree programmes for years after the first.

Per trasferirti a Unifi:

  • presenta domanda di trasferimento in uscita presso il tuo ateneo di provenienza;
  • registrati ai Servizi online studenti dell’Università di Firenze;

To transfer to the University of Florence, you must:

  • submit an outgoing transfer request to your home university;
  • register with the University of Florence’s Online Student Services;
  • complete the online application and pay the required fees.

Only after the University receives the clearance certificate (foglio di congedo) from your home institution will the Student Administation Career Office contact you by email to assign your student ID number. The clearance certificate is the document through which your home university authorises the transfer to another institution.

How to transfer from the University of Florence to another institution

Do you wish to continue your studies at another university without losing the exams you have already taken? If you are enroled at the University of Florence and want to transfer to another institution, you can submit an outgoing transfer request. By transferring:

  • you end your enrolment at the University of Florence;
  • you may request recognition of the exams you have taken at the new institution;
  • your academic record will be transferred to the destination university.

Before submitting your request, check the procedures, requirements and deadlines set by the university you wish to transfer to.

You can submit your request through the University of Florence’s Online Student Services:

  • from September to November, according to the relevant deadlines;
  • until December, with an additional fee (100 euros).

You are entitled to a refund of university fees if:

  • you submit your transfer request by December;
  • you have not carried out any academic activities in the current academic year (exams, internships, grade registrations, document requests, etc.).

If you obtain a place in a restricted‑access degree programme at another university, check the deadline calendar to verify whether you can transfer after the ordinary deadlines. In this case too, the refund is possible only if you have not carried out any academic activities.

You are not entitled to a refund if:

  • you have already carried out academic activities in the current academic year;
  • you submit your request after the established deadlines and do not fall within the specified exceptions.

After completing the transfer, you cannot return to the University of Florence before one academic year has passed, unless there are serious reasons, except for restricted‑access degree programmes.
