Enrol in a second cycle degree programme

Who is eligible to enrol

You can enrol in a second (master’s) degree programme if you hold a first (bachelor’s) degree, a three‑year university diploma, or a foreign qualification recognised as valid.

Check the list of degree programmes to see whether the one you are interested in has unrestricted or restricted access, and follow the corresponding enrolment procedure.

How to enrol in an unrestricted‑access degree programme

You must meet specific curricular requirements and have an adequate academic background. For this reason, the first step is always to request clearance.

To request clearance (nulla osta) certificate if you hold a qualification obtained in Italy:

  1. check the admission requirements for the second (master’s) degree programme you are interested in directly on the programme website (for example, you may be required to have a specific language level or a minimum first (bachelor’s) degree grade);
  2. if you are not yet registered on the GCS portal, create your profile;
  3. in the GCS portal, complete the clearance request (Path: Segreteria > Nulla osta laurea magistrale);
  4. wait for the outcome of the evaluation, which will be sent to you by email. You will receive a response within 30 days;
  5. if you are eligible, you will be able to enrol;
  6. if you are not eligible, you will need to clear any academic deficiencies (through single courses or other methods) and then submit a new request.

If you have obtained clearance, you can enrol.

  1. Access the GCS portal and complete the enrolment procedure.
  2. Pay the first instalment of tuition fees, which will be generated in the GCS portal. You can pay within the deadlines indicated in the Deadlines Calendar.

Next steps

  • You will receive your student ID number within 5 days.
  • Your institutional email account (@edu.unifi.it) will be activated within the following 5 days. Always use it: it is the only official communication channel.
  • You will receive the Tuscany Student Card (Carta Studente della Toscana), which grants access to all services.

You can submit your Admission Document request exclusively through the Apply Unifi portal.

For further information, consult the Admission Document webpage.

How to enrol in a restricted‑access degree programme

Read the admission call carefully: for these programmes (local or national) you must follow the specific instructions and deadlines set out in the relevant admission calls.

Admission to years after the first: you can enrol only if places are available and if you meet the requirements set out in the admission call.

If you have already taken the test, applied for the selection procedure, and been placed in the ranking list:

  • access the GCS portal and complete the enrolment procedure by accepting your place;
  • pay the first instalment of tuition fees, which will be generated in the GCS portal. You must pay by the deadline indicated on the payment slip, otherwise you will lose your place.

How to continue your academic career if you are already studying at Unifi

You can enrol if you have completed all your exams and only your thesis is pending, provided you meet the deadlines.

  • If you graduate before the enrolment deadline, do not renew your first (bachelor’s) degree enrolment. Once you have graduated and obtained clearance, complete the online enrolment for the second (master’s) degree programme.
  • If you graduate between November and April, pay the first instalment of first (bachelor’s) degree tuition fees by the deadline. Once you have graduated, this payment will count as your enrolment fee for the second (master’s) degree programme. After graduating, submit the IM_01 form (available on the Forms webpage) and the clearance document to the Student Academic Career Offices.
  • If you do not graduate in time, the first instalment you paid will be used to renew your first (bachelor’s) degree enrolment (you will also need to pay the second instalment).
  • If you are coming from another university and graduate late, you may request the cancellation of the 100 euro late fee from the Student Academic Career Offices.
