The Italian university system

The Italian university system is structured into three cycles of study:

  • First cycle: bachelor’s degree programmes (three‑year).
  • Second cycle: master’s degree programmes (two‑year), single‑cycle master’s degree programmes, and first‑level master programmes.
  • Third cycle: Ph.D. programmes, Specialisation diplomas, and second‑level master programmes.

Degree programmes are organised through European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) - Crediti Formativi Universitari (CFU) -, which measure the student workload, including taught classes and independent study.

  • 1 ECTS corresponds to approximately 25 hours of study;
  • a full‑time student earns an average of 60 ECTS per year (1,500 hours);
  • CTU are equivalent to European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits;
  • ECTS are awarded upon passing exams or completing other learning activities;
  • exams are graded on a 30‑point scale: the minimum passing grade is 18/30, the maximum is 30/30 with honours.
