Recognition of a foreign qualification to obtain an Italian aualification

Procedure of academic recognition

The University of Florence, within its autonomy and regulations, subject to relevant bilateral agreements (see the Manifesto degli Studi, section 11.1, note 12), may recognise courses and periods of study undertaken abroad and foreign academic qualifications for the purpose of:

  • continuing university studies;
  • obtaining an Italian university degree.

You may apply for the recognition of a foreign qualification, awarded by a state or legally recognised higher education institution, to obtain a first cycle degree (triennale), single cycle (ciclo unico), or second cycle (magistrale) degree offered by the University of Florence.

Check the course catalogue to see which degree programme you wish to apply for recognition of.

For unrestricted access programmes, please contact the International Desk.

Fee: 400 euro plus 16 euro stamp duty.

When: from 1 July to 15 September 2026. It is also possible to submit your application by 6 November 2026, subject to an additional fee of 100 euro.

  2. submit your application:
    • in person at the International Desk, by booking an appointment via the UFirst app;
    • By certified email to internationaldesk(AT)pec.unifi.it, stating “application for recognition of foreign qualification” in the subject line

Documents to attach

  • form RI_01 duly filled (available on the Forms webpage);
  • copy of an identity document;
  • payment receipt;
  • foreign academic qualification for which you are applying for recognition;
  • Diploma Supplement, or a certificate listing the exams taken;
  • syllabi of the exams taken;
  • the qualification that granted access to the degree for which recognition is sought (only if obtained abroad) as follows: an upper secondary school diploma is needed for applications for a first cycle (bachelor’s) degree or single-cycle degree, while a first cucle (bachelor’s) degree is required for applications for a second cycle (master’s) degree;
  • Declaration of value (Dichiarazione di valore in loco), or CIMEA certificates of verification and comparability of the qualification for which you are seeking recognition and the entry qualification.

All foreign documents must be:

  • legalised or apostilled (except in cases where international conventions provide for exemption from legalisation or apostille. In such cases of exemption, the University will seek confirmation from the institution that issued the qualification);
  • accompanied by an official translation into Italian if they are not written in English, French or Spanish.

For restricted access programmes, applications for recognition must be submitted according to the procedures set out in the calls for applications to subsequent years (bandi di trasferimento ad anni successivi al primo) published on the Access to restricted programmes web page.

Each call for applications specifies the costs and deadlines.

The administrative structure responsible for your chosen degree programme will assess your application and may decide:

  • to grant direct recognition of your foreign qualification, resulting in the issuance of a Rector’s Decree of Direct Recognition (a very rare occurrence);
  • a partial recognition of your foreign qualification, specifying the year of admission, the cohort, the recognised exams, and the exams and credits to be obtained in order to achieve the chosen qualification.

If the administrative structure decides to grant partial recognition of your foreign qualification, you can enroll as follows:

  • if you are an EU or non-EU national residing in Italy with a valid residence permit, you can enroll within 30 days of the outcome notification, by contacting the relevant Students Administration Office.
  • if you are a non-EU national residing abroad, you must submit an application for pre-enrollment and a study visa via the Universitaly portal within 30 days of the outcome notification. Once you arrive in Italy, you must contact the relevant Students Administration Office to finalise your enrollment;

Check the School’s website and the regulations for your chosen degree programme to see if you are required to sit the TOLC entry assessment.

If you do not complete your enrollment by the deadline, you will have to start the whole recognition process again from the beginning.

Procedure of non-academic and professional recognition

If you wish to apply for recognition for non-academic or professional purposes such as:

  • access public competitions;
  • practice of regulated professions or access the job market of unregulated professions.

You must submit your application to the relevant State administration or Italian Ministry.
