Ongoing Orientation: support during your studies

The ongoing orientation performs a strategic function in combating educational failure, promoting study paths and personal growth

These are activities and specific support and training measures aimed at helping students who, during times of transition or difficulty, have to make important choices/decisions.

The emphasis is on support and motivation throughout the university programme, so that students are helped to increase their self-esteem, develop self-awareness and recognise and enhance their skills, particularly those related to problem-solving (solving complex situations) in order to make informed and motivated decisions about their future.

The University of Florence is organizing a series of in-person workshops focused on enhancing study techniques and fostering self-regulated learning. The goal is to equip students with essential practical skills and help them optimize their exam performance. Each session lasts 60 minutes and accommodates up to 30 participants.

The workshop are held in Italian.

The programme includes four events:

  • How to study exam texts?

Thursday, 4 December 2025, from 9 to 10 a.m., at the Novoli Campus, Building D4, room 0.10, via delle Pandette - Firenze
The meeting aims to clarify which reading strategies are most effective, with a particular focus on how to assess your understanding of exam material. Key techniques explored in depth will include reciprocal teaching and the use of KWL charts - Register now

  • How can you improve your motivation?

Monday, 12 January 2025, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Novoli Campus, Builing D4, room 1.06, via delle Pandette - Firenze
We will discuss how to correctly interpret situations of success/failure and how to define learning objectives. We will then take a closer look at the motivation self-assessment tool - Register now

  • Do I have to attend? When should I start studying for the exam?

Date to be scheduled

This session will address crucial questions about planning and self-regulation. The discussion will focus on strategies for managing space and time, and on how and when to ask for help. The Learning Diary will also be presented.

  • How do you take notes?

Date to be scheduled

During the meeting, we will examine note-taking techniques and assess whether these strategies should differ between lectures and textbook study or between different courses. We will illustrate both the Cornell technique and the difference between annotation and underlining.
