The Italian higher education system is organised in three main cycles, following the structure of the Bologna Process adopted throughout Europe.
First Cycle – Bachelor’s Degree (Laurea Triennale)
Duration: 3 years
Credits: 180 ECTS
Objective: To provide students with a solid grounding in a specific discipline and the essential professional and methodological skills.
Entry requirements: Secondary School diploma (min. 12 years of school education)
Outcome: Graduates obtain a Bachelor’s Degree, which gives access to the labour market or to Master’s Degree programmes (second cycle).
Second Cycle – Master’s Degree (Laurea Magistrale)
Duration: 2 years
Credits: 120 ECTS
Objective: To offer advanced education and training in specific fields, combining theoretical and applied learning.
Entry requirements: Bachelor’s Degree
Outcome: Graduates obtain a Master’s Degree, which allows access to doctoral studies or specialised professional positions.
Some programmes, such as Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Law, Pharmacy and Architecture, are Single-Cycle Degrees, lasting 5 or 6 years and directly leading to a Master’s-level qualification.

At the University of Florence, academic programmes are grouped under Schools, which bring together related Departments and study areas.

Each School coordinates the teaching activities, orientation initiatives, and student support for its own programmes.

For example:

The School of Engineering includes degree programmes in civil, industrial and computer engineering.
The School of Humanities and Education includes programmes in literature, history, philosophy, and education sciences.
During the Orientation Weeks, each School will present both its Bachelor’s (First Cycle) and Master’s (Second Cycle) degree programmes.

If your interest is in Doctoral (PhD) programmes, please note that these are part of the third cycle of higher education and are open only to students who already hold a Master’s Degree (or equivalent qualification).
The University of Florence organises a dedicated PhD Orientation Day, specifically designed for prospective doctoral candidates.
You are warmly invited to attend that event for detailed information about:

  • PhD programmes and research areas
  • Admission requirements and calls for applications
  • Scholarships and research opportunities
