Objectives: To provide the basis of dimensioning and design of the major hydraulic structures, also of large dimensions, and of infrastructures.
Topics: Fundamentals and procedures of design of the most important hydraulic structures (dams, dikes, channels, land reclamation, harbors, hydropower plants .). Hydraulic problems related to transport infrastructures (bridges, roads, .). Validation of the functional scheme and of the reference rules related to the structure design.

The course aims to provide the basis for dimensioning and design of the major hydraulic structures also of large dimensions, and of the infrastructures.
The functional scheme will be also defined and the reference rules related to the structure design will be discussed with reference to dimensioning and design of:
1) structures for territory and human activities protection from flood risk;
2) structures for water resources enhancement;
3) structures for the solution of the hydraulic problems related to transport infrastructures.

The course is developed in lectures and traditional classroom discussions, seminars and practical applications possibly on specific topics by experts, dedicated primarily to some topics.
Part of the learning process is also the review activity of the project work, which can be carried out collectively in the classroom during the course.
Lectures notes, further documents to study in depth, useful dataset, can become available during the lectures period on Moodle platform at UNIFI http://e-l.unifi.it/
During the first weeks of the course the enrollment to the platform is required to the students the intend to attend the course.
Type of Assessment
The evaluation of the student profit is performed on the basis of an oral examination where also a project work, defined in agreement with the teacher, carried out on the basis of the course contents, individually or in small groups, is presented and discussed.
In the assessment of learning process is included also the student's activity during the lectures period: a) in the frame of review activity of the project work, shared and collectively carried out; b) presentation and discussion of specific topics, suggested by the teacher or for the student interest, to study in depth on the basis of available literature.
Introduction to hydraulic structures and work for river basin and streams settlements.
Tools for the characterization of reference systems of:
a) Hydrological Modeling with software HEC-HMS for rainfall – runoff and hydrograph estimation.
b) Hydraulic Modeling with software HEC-RAS to perform one-dimensional hydraulic calculations for a full network of natural and constructed channels.
Definition of regulations reference scenarios at national, regional and local level, for the characterization of the environmental frame.
Characterization of natural and artificial hydrographic networks.
Types and constructive criteria of structures for territory protection and defense against flood risks and structures for water resources enhancement in the frame of an integrated for territory management. Types and constructive criteria of and weirs, dikes, dams and flood control reservoirs, harbor structures, hydropower plants, canalization and navigation canals.
Hydraulic problems of bridges; hydrodynamic forces, erosion, backwater.
Removal of rainwater from the bridge decks and road surfaces.
