The role of religious life in the dynamics of Italian society during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The course will illustrate the peculiarities of central-northern Italy, highlighting how in the period of conflict between the Empire and the Papacy, the reform of the customs of the clergy and religious life has been a matter of broad social scope and has involved not only the elite government, but also the citizens, increasingly aware of their identity.

Achievement of the ability to lead, with the guidance of the teacher, a literature search aimed to compose an essay on the subject of relationship between social structures
religious life and political drop in eleventh and twelfth century Italy, orienting themselves in historiography and specific historiography and with a direct approach to some eleventh and twelfth century sources
Good knowledge of the general history of the European Middle Ages, with particular reference to the eleventh and twelfth centuries
Lectures of the teacher and discussion seminars with students, integrated by the contribution of Italian and foreign guests teachers.
Will be considered attendign student only the ones who will participate at the discussion seminars during school hours and whose topics will be agreed with the teacher
Type of Assessment
The Assessment will take the form of written paper (essay), 15 pages, with critical apparatus, produced by the student as a result of a focused literature search conducted with the guidance of the teacher. The paper will focus some of the issues addressed during the course and will be elaborated on the basis of a bibliography individually elaborated with the teacher. The reference texts mentioned must be regarded only as reference points for individual research. Three stages are planned: presentation and discussion of a thematic index of the elaborate; Presentation and discussion of a paragraph; Presentation of the complete work subject of discussion to the examination, one week before the exam session chosen by the student.
The final exam will be presented as a formative evaluation and will also include the provision of a self-assessment form based on the objectives set out by the course.
The elaborate must highlight the research capacity, even autonomous, and of the student's synthesis.
The final judgment will be determined for 50% on the synthesis capacity developed by the student in the written paper, 40% on the acquisition of the appropriate historical terminology and 10% on the formal and editorial skills of the exam test
The course will mainly refer to the papacy and the cities of Milan and Florence, which in the eleventh century were at the forefront of the movement of ethical-religious reform. The lessons will show how the dynamics of the power struggles between the papacy and the Empire had a wide social and political impact in these cities.
