Emotions and criminality are two typical issues of the new cultural history, to which an introduction is given in this course. How have people's fears and the image of the so-called dangerous individuals changed from the late XIXth century to the present? Moving from recent investigations on both individual and collective fears carried out in various capitals of the world (Fearless, 2008) and from the contemporary debate among experts, we will look at the past in order to explore the social construction of emotions and of dangerousness, from the fear of the 'stranger' (gipsies and immigrants) and of the other (homosexuals) to domestic violence, in which children are involved and women are either victims or authors of the violence. The course focuses on the interactions among subjectivity, social norms, prejudices, and opinions of the experts in law, psychology and criminal anthropology. Criminality is analyzed in a historical and gender perspective, considering some paradigmatic cases of the 20th century and of the present (infanticides and abuse)
