The aim of the course is to transfer knowledge on main methodologies, tools and standards functional to the improvement of the quality, reliability and safety of industrial products.
Systematic knowledge of key aspects of the mechanical design of industrial engineering and related methods; for the latter, an understanding of which are the most suitable in order to define a product and its characteristics of quality, reliability and safety. The areas of knowledge and understanding are the technology of usable materials, the mechanical study of parts and assemblies, their sizing, the study of interactions between components, their graphic representation, the applicable techniques and methods and their limitations, including the awareness of the non-technical implications of engineering practice.
The ability to choose and apply appropriate analytical, modelling and verification methods to design and analyse machines and plants, included: analysis and design of production systems, including reliability and safety studies. The ability to apply one's own knowledge to identify, formulate and solve industrial and specifically mechanical engineering problems, defining safety specifications and constraints, and to solve them using established methods, thus implementing engineering projects that match the level of knowledge and understanding developed. Projects may concern products, devices, machines, energy systems, automatic systems.

Type of Assessment
Oral test. The questions are of a theoretical and applicative nature regarding the areas of quality, reliability and safety of mechanical constructions. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired a basic knowledge of the topics, ability to approach problems, and familiarity with the use of methodologies and tools concerning the subjects being taught. The questions during the oral exam are aimed at ascertaining a good level of achievement of the skills reported in the training objectives.
The reliability section concerns: the elements of descriptive statistics and the main statistical distributions and data analysis; the reliability of the systems; reliability measures and analysis and the main design methods adopted in the reliability sector (such as the FMEA, FTA, Hazop, etc.). Also in this case, on the main topics discussed, exercises are carried out to promote the learning of the concepts by the learners.
The safety section deals with the critical analysis of the differences between product and social European regulations in the safety sector, introducing the roles and responsibilities of the actors involved. Subsequently, the main product directives that are related to the mechanical sector are introduced, entering into the substance of the Machine Directive (2006/42/EC). Then, the main methods, tools and standards adopted in the design and safety of the machines are presented, showing, through applications to real cases, the methodological approach followed for the risk assessment and presenting the typology and characteristics of the main devices and safety components mounted on mechanical equipment. A space is also dedicated to show the documentation of safety (in terms of structure and contents of Technical Construction File, Instruction Manual for Use, declarations of conformity, ...) and the certification process that must be followed by a manufacturer of a machine for placing on the market of the same.
