Course Content
The course will be divided into two parts: the aim of the first one will be an introduction to the basic tools of Italian philology; the second one will accompany the students to read and analyze a critical edition in all its aspects.

Further bibliography will be given during the course. Some more texts will be indicated during the course and available for students.
Learning Objectives
The course introduces to the knowledge of the basic elements of the textual criticism, in order to read correctly a critical edition and to verify the quality of some critical editions and their scientific significance in the field of the textual studies.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Latin.
Teaching Methods
Frontal lecture. It tools and assisted exam of some manuscripts in at least one library in Florence.

Course program
The course will introduce the students to the textual criticism and its relationship with history, linguistics and paleography. It will explain the philological methods (from the manuscript to a good critical edition). The course will explain the ways of the transmission of the texts. As an example of authorial philology, we will read the critical edition of Manzoni’s Adelchi, edited by I. Becherucci.
