Learning Objectives
The course has the aim of providing:
- knowledge related to quantitative analytical chemistry;
- skills for the selection of analytical methods suitable for environmental applications and the processing of data obtained.
The skills acquired at the end of the course will allow the resolution of theoretical exercises for quantitative analysis; the selection of the analytical method suitable for the environmental applications and the processing of multivariate data.
Prerequisites
General chemistry and basic notions of inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry.
Teaching Methods
Oral lessons in the classroom with slideshow. During the lessons, the solution and commentary on current environmental issues taken by the media will be proposed for dialectical development with the students.
Type of Assessment
Oral exam aimed at solving environmental problems to assess the level of knowledge and skills reached.
Course program
Fundamentals of qualitative and quantitative analysis and use of the analytical signal; method of the external standard, internal and standard additions. Sampling techniques. Sample preparation. Data processing: error; reliability of the analytical data; validation of the methods; statistical analysis: hypothesis testing for parametric statistics; chemometrics; analysis of the main components; multivariate regression techniques.
Classic analytical methods for environmental analysis based on UV-vis spectroscopy, colorimetry, FTIR spectroscopy; absorption spectroscopy and atomic emission. Innovative methods: sensors and biosensors. Applications in the environmental field.
