Knowledge and understanding
The course aims to provide advanced knowledge on the theoretical aspects and t psychometric characteristics of the most significant instruments to detect nature and development of the attachment bonds in the early phases of life, childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
Applying knowledge and understanding.
The course will provide students with the specialized skills, theoretical and methodological, required to consciously use within the developmental-clinical and research tools, methods and techniques to detect the development and characteristics of the attachment bonds over the life span.
Making judgments.
Particular emphasis will be paid to develop in students a critical attitude and to teach them to judge the strengths and limitations of the different methods and tools presented.
Communication skills.
The course will provide students with the knowledge necessary to acquire a specific, specialized vocabulary to communicate and argue the concepts studied.
Learning skills.
Provide a basis of specialistic knowledges on course's issues. Implement students' ability to connect theoretical and empirical knowledges. Acquire skills and practices necessary to assess nature and characteristics of attachment bonds over the life span.

Prerequisites - Last names A-K
The basic knowledge of the attachment theory and its latest developments is considered indispensable. To this end, it is recommended to know the first two chapters of the volume:
-Tani F. (2007), Normality and pathology of development, Giunti, Florence.
The contents of these chapters will be considered an integral part of the exam’s program.

Methods and techniques for assessing the nature and development of attachment bonds over the life span: theoretical, methodological and psychometric properties of different methods and techniques. The attachment bonds during early childhood, with particular reference to clinical orientation techniques, such as the Infant Observation of Esther Bick and the Strange Situation Mary Ainsworth and colleagues. In relation to these tecniques, the focus will be on the theoretical bases, characteristics of different settings, criteria of coding and data processing. The psychometric scales for measuring the quality of attachment within the social networks: the Network of Relationships Inventory. The self-report questionnaires for the detection of attachment to parents and peers: the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment. The projective techniques to detect the styles of attachment in childhood: the Separation Anxiety Test. The scales for measuring the quality of sibling relationships in adulthood: the Adult Sibling Relationship Questionnaire. The instruments to the detect the attachment characteristics within intimate relationships in adolescence and adulthood: the Experiences on Close Relationships, the Friendship Qualities Scale and Romantic Qualities Scale. The scales to detect communication strategies and the satisfaction within the couple.
For all the tools presented focus will be the theoretical basis of scale construction, the administration criteria, coding system, techniques of inserting and processing data and, finally, reading the protocols. Interview techniques for the detect attachment bonds in adulthood: the Adult Attachment Interview by Mary Main and colleagues: theoretical, methodological assumptions and coding criteria.
