Learning Objectives
Introduction to the cultural and narrative styles of Turkish nationalism; Critical approaches of the Modernists; Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar, Oguz Atay, Adalet Agaoglu. Post Modern narrative; Orhan Pamuk, Latife Tekin, Ahmet Altan and others. Analysis of language, of style and of content by reading selected texts. Comparing examples of traslated texts with their originals.
Prerequisites
A discrete knowledge of Turkish and of a modern European language is desirable.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and teacher led activities/seminars. Parallel to the course there will be drills in Turkish language skills and translation of selected literary works both in verse and in prose. Comparing examples of Italian translations of texts with their originals.
Further information
The course will take place in the second semester. It will be held in italian. Pamuk's novels will be read and analysed mainly in Italian, although their originals will be part of drills in language and translation. The drills are part of the language assistance programme which covers both the first and the second semestres.
Type of Assessment
The students are invited to present and discuss in the class at least two papers on the questions treated during the course. The final exam consists in translating a text chosen between the narratives read during the course, answering to questions regarding its translation in Italian and in open questions on Turkish narratives read during the course and the literary phenomenon they reflect. For a successful exam it is necessary have written the requested papers and to show a sufficient level of preparation in all parts of the examination.
Oral exam in Italian aims to evaluate the following items:
- cultural and linguistic knowledge (40/100)
-argumentation ability (40/100)
- original approach to the subject (20/100)
