The course will focus on elements of structural geology, geophysics and geodesy that are important in the engineering sector. Major themes will include stress, strain, faulting, earthquake seismology, and ground deformation.
Global Tectonics 3rd edition, by Kearey, Klepeis, Vine, Wiley Blackwell
Obiettivi Formativi
Understand basic concepts of tectonic stress, fluid pressure, and failure of rock, and also appreciate how stress varies in different tectonic settings.
Understand geodynamic processes and especially upper crustal faulting processes in different tectonic settings, and be able to make structural interpretations on a variety of geological and geophysical datasets
Understand the theory / methodology behind earthquake seismology and ground deformation techniques such as InSAR and GPS.
Be able to use seismic and geodetic datasets to solve problems related to infrastructure hazard.
Metodi Didattici
The course will comprise of a combination of lectures and related practicals.
Modalità di verifica apprendimento
Class based practical exercises will not be assessed but feedback provided to students on a continuous basis. Assessment will be in the form of a written essay (20%), and then the verbal exam in which a prepared presentation (40%), and questions relating to the presentation and the course in general (40%).
