Equipping the students of the methodological grounds for the study of the ancient topography both concerning the historical and topographical issues and the archaeological protection of the territory
Prerequisites
Basic notions of Roman History and Latin language, one classroom in Ancient Topography

Lessons in classroom with slides and - if possible - visits on archaeological sites

Type of Assessment
Final oral Examination. The student has to demonstrate a knowledge of the urban development of the central area of Rome in the imperial age through the historical and monumental analysis of the imperial fora and the Roman Forum. For the 2nd course, he will discuss in the class during a seminar a monument of Rome in his topographical context: the choice will be among monument of the entire ancient period from Iron Age to Late Antique.

Course 1:
The topographical research on ancient Rome: methods, bibliographic instruments; the monumental centre: Roman Forum and Imperial Fora.
Course 2:
The topographical research on ancient Rome: main literary, cartographic, iconographic, sources; The walls of ancient Rome, in archaic, republican, imperial and early medieval age, the pomerium and his evolution, the Regiones (administrative divisions) of Rome, during the age of Servius Tullius, the Augustan age, the ecclesiastical divisions; imperial gardens (horti) an their urban role, examples of single monuments of the city of Rome from the origin to the late antique during a seminar and final visit to some of them on the place
