Course teached as: B029688 - ARCHITETTURE E TECNOLOGIE PER RETI INTELLIGENTI Second Cycle Degree in TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING Curriculum RETI E TECNOLOGIE INTERNET
Teaching Language
Italian with English teaching material.
Course Content
The Course is focused on the modern Telecommunications Networks design principles, i.e., Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization, with application to Cloud Computing, 5G system and Internet of Things domains.
William Stallings, "Foundations of Modern Networking: SDN, NFV, QoE, IoT, and Cloud" Pearson, 2016, 1st edition.
Learning Objectives
The Course provides the foundation elements for the effective understanding, design and management of advanced networking and computing architectures, based on virtualization and orchestration of network functions and applications. Specifically, network programmability is addressed through Software Defined Networking (SDN) e and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) approaches.
The Course provides a comprehensive overview of the Cloud Computing and Networking and Internet of Things architectures. The specific requirements imposed by these architectures are considered in a 5G integration perspective, by means of addressing the potential benefits of SDN and NFV paradigms.
The Course aims at training professionals able to effectively master knowledge on networking technologies together with IT technologies and business elements.
Prerequisites
Fundamentals of programming, networking and protocols.
Teaching Methods
Class lectures and seminars on specific topics.
Type of Assessment
Written and Oral exam, focused on a specific project design with the aim of verifying:
- the acquisition of knowledge on technologies and model for network programming as well as advanced networking architectures;
- the capabilities in analysing and evaluating the adoption of above mentioned models and technologies;
the ability to apply the acquired knowledges.
Course program
- Overview on the paradigms of Things, Cloud Computing, 5G
- Analysis of traffic management requirements and limitation of current network architecture
- Cloud Computing: main principles, cloud services model (Software as a Service, Platfrma as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service), deployment models, cloud reference architecture.
- Internet of Things: reference architecture and principal components
- Software defined networking: limitations of existing network technologies and SDN principles and SDN main principles; SDN data plane and OpenFlow protocol; SDN Control Plane (SDN Controller reference architecture, analysis of state of the art controllers, REST APIs, centralized and distributed control plane); SDN Application Plane and main SDN applications (traffic engineering, monitoraggio, data center networking)
- Network Function Virtualization: main concepts, NFV Management and Orchestration, usage of SDN in an NFV environment
- Advanced scenarios: Mobile Edge Computing and reti 5G e Fog Computing
Depending on students’ feedback, seminars will be provided showing the use of SDN controllers (OpenDayLight/ONOS) and cloud management system (e.g. OpenStack)
