The aim of this course is to analyze and evaluate the characteristics of landscape urbanism in the field of urban and regional planning. The unit will analyze the incorporation of landscape elements into the urban fabric following the adoption of development control. Landscape urbanism will be evaluated using some case studies as a framework to outline and assess the scope and potential of the planning system to protect and create quality landscapes.

On successful completion of this unit you will have to:
Explain the evolution of landscape elements within regional areas and cities,
Explain the concept of Landscape Urbanism even related to different approaches,
Describe the institutional setting within which planning decisions are made that impact upon landscape planning provision,
Critically assess landscape urbanism quality,
Present clear arguments in assessing Landscape Urbanism quality.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to be acquainted with the main theoretical and methodological approaches in Urban and Regional Planning.
Teaching Methods
This unit will include a range of teaching approaches. Most of the unit will be dominated by lectures and intermediate reviews for the students dissertation/report. It is compulsory for students to attend these activities. The purpose of activities is to cover the necessary scope of the unit in a way that maintains diversity and interest.
Further information
Examines the landscape urbanism features of the world cities. The role of urban and regional planning in landscape urbanism provision, including the evaluation of landscape and cities quality of life. The exam will be carried out on the dissertation/report.
Type of Assessment
The assessment for this unit consists of the following items:
1.Dissertation/Report: Assessment of the form, function, ecological integrity, planning value and management implications of European or International Capital Cities (ex. Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, London, Valencia, Milan, Rome, Perth, New York, Shanghai, etc..). To be presented as a verbal and written presentation. The criterial approaches have to be started from city projects explain how the new part of the city (urban or architecture plans) has changed the urban or regional context; what kind of influences has developed; in the end if the project respect the Landscape Urbanism criterial approach.
2.Oral Examination.

−The cultural landscape foundation: Ian McHarg (Design with Nature)
−The New Urbanism Movement
−The effects of globalization and the urban sprawl (push and pull factors)
−Megacity and Big Cities: the urban growth and the transformation of urban landscape (some case studies: Shanghai, Tokyo, Karachi, São Paulo, Mexico City, New York, Mumbai, London, etc..)
−The current trends and transformations in the world: urban age, the projects for the environment and for an urban landscape sustainable
−CASE STUDY: AUSTRALIA. Presentation of case study: City of Perth some of my research.
