Giulio Vannini is Associate Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Florence, Dept. of Literature and Philosophy. In the same Dept. he is President of the University Master programme in Classical Philology, Literature and History of Classical Antiquity, Coordinator of the Section "Classics, Medieval and Renaissance Studies", as well as a member of the Department Committee ("Giunta"). He is also a member of the scientific board of the PhD in Classics and Archaeology, Universities of Pisa, Florence, and Siena, and a member of the Management committee of the Istituto Papirologico “Girolamo Vitelli”.
He was previously Associate Professor of Latin Language and Literature at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, where he was a member of the scientific board of the PhD in Literature, Library Sciences, Linguistics and International Communications, as well as President of the “Presidio di Ateneo per la Qualità della didattica e della ricerca”.
Vannini studied Latin Literature at the University of Florence, where he graduated in 2003. He obtained his PhD (“perfezionamento”) in Classical Philology, Linguistics and History at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa in 2006. He was awarded the “Giorgio Pasquali” scholarship by the latter, and a research grant by the University of Florence. In the years 2010-2012 he taught Latin Language as an adjunct professor at the University for Foreigners of Perugia. In July 2012 he was appointed Researcher at the same University. In the years 2012-2014 was granted a Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Institut für Klassische Philologie of the Humboldt University of Berlin. In September 2018 he obtained a national qualification (ASN) as Full Professor of Classical and Late-Antique Philology and a further qualification as Full Professor of Latin Language and Literature. During these years, he has held lecture courses on Latin language and literature, and gave Doctoral seminars for PhD candidates. Since 2015 he has held lectures on Classical literature and on its transmission at the University of Pula (Croatia).
His interests deal with literary interpretation, textual criticism and textual transmission of classical authors. Vannini specialized in the study of the Latin prose of the I century A.D., and in particular of Latin narrative. He published widely on Petronius, Seneca Apokolokyntosis, the Story of Apollonius, king of Tyre, with specific contributions on single authors (Catullus, Propertius, the Younger Seneca, the Younger Pliny, Apuleius), on the transmission of classical authors and their reception in medieval and modern age. He has given presentations on all these subjects both at national and international meetings, as a participant and organiser.
He is the author of an extensive critical survey on the Petronian studies of the last thirty years (“Petronius 1975-2005: bilancio critico e nuove proposte”), published as a monographic volume on Lustrum (Göttingen, Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht 2007). On Petronius he produced a critical edition with in-depth commentary of the sea voyage episode, published in the “Beiträge zur Altertumskunde” series by De Gruyter (Berlin – New York 2010). He edited the Apokolokyntosis with introduction, Italian translation and commentary (Milano, Mondadori 2008). Among his most recent works are a new translation with explanatory notes of the Younger Pliny (50 lettere, Milano, Mondadori 2019; Panegirico a Traiano, Milano, Mondadori 2019) and a new critical edition with a wide-ranging commentary of the novel Story of Apollonius king of Tyre for the Lorenzo Valla series “Scrittori Greci e Latini” (Milano, Mondadori 2018). He is currently working on a new critical edition of Petronius’ Satyrica for the “Oxford Classical Texts” series.
He participated and currently takes part in various research projects, including PRIN grants funded by the Italian Government, and a PRTLI (Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions 4) funded by the Irish Government. He has been responsible for some internal research projects funded by the University for Foreigners of Perugia.
He is a Fellow of the “Lorenzo Valla Foundation”. He is a member of the scientific board of “Materiali e Discussioni per l’analisi dei testi classici”, "Ancient Narrative", “Erat olim: nuovi materiali e contributi per lo studio della narrativa greco-latina”, and "Rivista di Studi Pliniani". He is a peer-referee for several national and international research institutions as well as for excellent international journals and renowned collections in the fields of classics.
