Attività di insegnamento
Ordinario di Archeologia Fenicio-Punica e poi di Archeologia e storia dell’arte del Vicino Oriente antico dal 2001, ha insegnato dal 1975 all’Università di Pisa tenendovi i corsi di Archeologia e storia dell’arte del Vicino Oriente antico, Archeologia fenicio-punica e Preistoria e protostoria del Vicino Oriente. Dal 2006 insegna presso l’Università di Firenze.Nel quadro di vari progetti di cooperazione italo-siriana (programma europeo MEDA, convenzione università Pisa-Damasco, progetto Regione Toscana) ha organizzato corsi universitari e seminari di archeologia e archeometria in Siria, presso l’Università di Damasco, la Scuola di Archeologia e il Museo di Idlib della Direzione delle Antichità e dei Musei di Siria, l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Ha organizzato diversi incontri internazionali e tenuto conferenze e seminari presso diverse istituzioni e università americane, europee e in Medio Oriente.
Attività di ricerca
Le sue ricerche si sono orientate sull’analisi sia di temi generali, quali la formazione delle società complesse del Levante tra fase Calcolitica ed Età del Bronzo e l’affermazione e sviluppo della cultura luvio-aramaica nell’età del Ferro, sia di materiali specifici e diversi, dalla ceramica alla glittica, agli avori. Lo studio di aspetti di cultura materiale, particolarmente collegati ad attività di scavo, le ha permesso di creare, sulla base di contesti archeologici noti del Levante settentrionale, una periodizzazione specifica dell’età del Ferro Siro-Fenicio (Ferro IA,B,C, IIA,B, III).
Ha partecipato dal 1968 agli scavi dell'Università di Roma a Ebla, Tell Fray, Tell Tuqan e Tell Afis e alle missioni dell’Università di Firenze nello Yemen del Nord.
Dirige dal 1986 un programma di scavi e survey a Tell Afis e nella sua regione.
Dirige dal 2008 un progetto di prospezione e scavi a Ushakli Höyük nell’Anatolia centrale.

Full professor of Phoenician and Punic Archaeology andnthen Archaeology and History of Art of the Ancient Near East since 2001 and first lecturer and then professor at the University of Pisa of: Archaeology and History of Art of the Ancient Near East, Phoenician and Punic Archaeology, Prehistory and Protohistory of the Near East and since 2006 at the University of Florence. Since 1968 she has taken part in the archaeological projects of the University of Rome at Tell Mardikh/Ebla, Tell Fray (1973), Tell Tuqan (1978,1981) and Tell Afis (1970, 1972,1978). She has also worked in the projects of the University of Florence in North Yemen in 1981, 1982 e 1985.
She lectured at many European and American institutions and universities; she has directed courses for archaeological training in Siria at the University of Damascus. She is the director since 1986 of the archaeological mission at Tell Afis and the survey in its area (Syria); to the project participate the universities of Bologna and Roma, la Sapienza.
She has organised international conferences: " Nuove Fondazioni nel Vicino Oriente antico: realtà e ideologia” (Pisa 1991), the workshop for launching the European project ARCANE “Associated Chronologies for the Ancient Near East” (Pisa 2002), and withc S.M. Cecchini the conferences: “Syrian and Phoenician Ivories of the early first millennium BCE: chronology, regional styles and iconographic repertories, patterns of inter-regional distribution”(Pisa 2004); “Percorsi di Archeologia Siriana. Giornate di studio celebrando 20 anni di archeologia a Tell Afis” (Pisa 2006). She has organised the seminar: "La Siria in Toscana" (2007).
She has studied general subjects of the archaeology of the ancient Near East, in particular the formation of the Levantine complex societies, the emergence and development of the Luwian and Aramaean culture, with special concern of the arts, the ideology of the kingship in the syro-hittite reliefs, the ivories and glyptics and pottery. As a field archaeologist she has been concerned with the refinement of the Late Bronze I-II and Iron I-III sequences of the Levant and the excavation of important buildings from the Late Chalcolithic to the Iron Age.
